In August 2024, a homeowner in Belfast discovered an oil leak from his domestic oil tank. The tank, used to heat his family home, had been in service for approximately 20 years. The homeowner's daughter first noticed the leak due to a strong smell, prompting an immediate investigation and response. The clean-up process involved digging to a depth of approximately 700mm and removing a significant amount of contaminated soil – amounting to one skip load. The clean-up operation cost approximately £7,000, which was covered by the homeowner’s insurance company.

In response to the leak, the homeowner arranged for an emergency replacement tank to be installed in the back garden.
