In August 2024, a homeowner in Belfast discovered an oil leak from his domestic oil tank. The tank, used to heat his family home, had been in service for approximately 20 years. The homeowner's daughter first noticed the leak due to a strong smell, prompting an immediate investigation and response. This case study explores the incident's details, its impact, and the measures taken to resolve the situation and prevent future occurrences.

The oil tank in question was a single-skin model that had been installed around two decades earlier. The tank showed some signs of aging, such as discolouration, but there were no major visible cracks or obvious signs of failure at first glance. However, upon closer inspection after the leak was discovered, a very small crack was found – barely visible to the naked eye. As single-skin oil tanks do not have an outer protective layer, they can become brittle due to exposure to UV light from the sun, making them more susceptible to cracking from cold weather or an uneven base. This crack was the source of the leak and highlights the importance of adhering to manufacturers' lifespan recommendations, as well as regularly servicing and inspecting oil tanks.

The quick detection of the leak likely prevented a more significant loss of oil. The homeowner estimated that approximately 100 litres of oil were lost due to the leak.

The tank was positioned close to the house, and there was a risk that the oil could seep into the underlying foundations. The clean-up process involved digging to a depth of approximately 700mm and removing a significant amount of contaminated soil – amounting to one skip load. The early detection and the swift action taken by the clean-up crew helped to mitigate potential environmental damage, particularly concerning groundwater pollution. The clean-up operation cost approximately £7,000, which was covered by the homeowner’s insurance company.

In response to the leak, the homeowner arranged for an emergency replacement tank to be installed in the back garden.
