Your Guide to Oil Storage Tanks & Which to Choose

1. Residential or commercial use?

If you are looking for a new or replacement oil tank for your home or for commercial premises, there are some key points to decide on first:

  • The capacity you need. For example the size of the property and the number of people. Titan bunded tanks come in capacities from 1,000 to 9,000 litres, while our single skin tanks range from 1,000 to 2,500 litre.
  • The space you have available. Do you need a slimline tank that is easier to fit into tight spaces or a low profile tank that can be more discreet and hidden away to match your garden or grounds? Our bunded range offers 16 sizes and shapes to suit all installations.

Homeowner?

Oil tanks MUST be installed by a trained technician or preferably an OFTEC approved installer, who will also advise you on the best tank for your premises. If you would like to talk to an expert, or arrange a visit from a qualified installer, get in touch.

Commercial use?

Again, oil tanks must be installed by a trained technician or preferably an OFTEC approved installer, who will also advise you on the best tank for your premises. Core considerations for oil tanks for commercial premises include the space you have available, the capacity you need and, most importantly, the requirements of building and other regulations.

Whichever Titan oil storage tank you use, rest assured it will be manufactured to a very high quality and far exceed all current regulations and safety standards.

2. Choosing the oil tank

There are two types of oil storage tanks: single skinned and bunded. Choosing an oil tank comes down to many factors including capacity, site constraints, budget, and regulations to name a few.

Single skinned tanks only have one ‘skin’ (layer of plastic) in which the oil is stored. They can provide a practical and cost-effective solution for domestic use if there are no other legal requirements.

A bunded tank is proven to be more reliable than a single skin tank. With two layers of plastic, it is like a tank within a tank. If the inner tank splits, the outer one offers that extra layer of protection, reducing the risk of leaks, spillage, ground contamination and theft. (Clean-up costs for domestic spills can run into the €80,000 mark and there is the environmental pollution caused by a spill as well.) A bunded tank can either be installed in a new build or to replace an existing tank that is damaged or showing its age.

At Titan, we offer the most advanced range of bunded tanks in Ireland and the UK. Our Titan EcoSafe bunded oil storage tanks come complete with a lockable lid, oil level monitoring device and 10-year guarantee* for total peace of mind. They also come with a Watchman tank monitor as standard to help you make sure you don’t run out of oil.

* 10 year warranty applies to tank only

Positioning

There are legislative requirements on the positioning of tanks, and building regulations are different for domestic and commercial buildings. Please call our dedicated team of experts at +44 (0) 28 3836 4675 for more information.

Installation

Before your new oil tank is installed, the following points must be considered: the location of your tank, a level and solid foundation, and accessibility for the delivery driver to fill it up. It is important that correct installation steps are followed to maintain tank warranty. If an old tank is being replaced, it should also be removed and disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

The base and support for your oil tank must also be considered. It is advised that the base should be:

  • Adequate for the weight of the tank
  • Non-combustible, imperforate and level
  • Constructed of concrete, paving stones or stonework
  • Large enough to extend 300mm beyond all sides of the tank.

The tank needs to be supported properly, as it can be weakened over time leading to leakages. Ground conditions can also change over time, so it is important to ensure the structural support remains in its original condition.

5. Would you benefit from a tank level monitoring system?

Enjoy the benefits of remote monitoring on tank levels 24/7 and in real time. Tank level monitoring provides practical help and real peace of mind.
